OHYAH

Acrylic on paper
96 x 67 in.
Unframed
2022

The impulse in naming this painting OHYAH was to play with a reference for the name of God, YAHWAH, as used in the word hallelujah (meaning praise God). The second element of hallelujah is YAH.

The painting title OHYAH also signals both surprise (OH) and agreement (YES) while shifting the yes affirmation to a more casual or ordinary -yeah (yah).

As a nuance, the word yeah is sometimes used ironically in phrases to express disbelief, such as in “Yeah, sure” and “Oh yeah, right.”
