GALLERY ASSISTANT

About the Role

de Montigny Contemporary is seeking a motivated and highly organized Gallery Assistant to join our team in Ottawa.

The Gallery Assistant will work closely with the Director on day-to-day gallery operations, supporting exhibitions, artists, collectors, sales, communications, events, art fairs, and administration. This is a hands-on position suited to someone genuinely engaged with contemporary art and interested in understanding how a commercial gallery works from the inside.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the day-to-day operation of the gallery
  • Welcome visitors, collectors, artists, curators, and other guests
  • Provide knowledgeable information about exhibitions, artists, and available works
  • Support sales inquiries and follow-up with clients
  • Maintain artwork, artist, collector, and inventory records
  • Prepare artwork information, price lists, condition reports, invoices, and related documentation
  • Assist with exhibition installation and deinstallation
  • Coordinate artwork movement, packing, shipping, and receiving
  • Support exhibition openings, artist talks, special events, and art fairs
  • Assist with website updates, newsletters, social media, and other gallery communications
  • Conduct research related to artists, collectors, institutions, exhibitions, and gallery projects
  • Maintain the presentation and organization of the gallery and back-of-house areas
  • Provide general administrative and project support to the Director

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong interest in contemporary art and the commercial gallery sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail
  • Confidence communicating professionally with artists, collectors, curators, and institutions
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
  • Comfort working in a small, fast-moving environment where responsibilities can shift quickly
  • Strong computer and digital communication skills
  • Professional discretion and good judgment
  • Previous experience in a gallery, museum, arts organization, auction house, or related environment is an asset
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • A degree and/ or ongoing studies in Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, or a related field is an asset, but not required

Knowledge of both English and French is considered an asset.

Sales experience is considered an asset.

Intermediate understanding of digital marketing is considered an asset.

Some evening and weekend availability will be required for openings, events, and art fairs.

Remuneration is based on experience and credentials.
