Marionette As Artist

This image is a nod to the theories on theatre written by Edward Gordon Craig, who writes: “The mask is a safeguard against realism, a guarantee against the emotions. It turns [actors] into über-marionettes, forcing the actor to play in a symbolical style and become a symbol.” Many queer artists use masks and performance to indicate that queerness is not represented on the surface of an image – but requires embedded meaning within the image itself. To queer the body is to “swell, mutate, dissolve, double, and decompose before our eyes [...] as a site of resistance” (Chadwick, 1998, p. 14). The mask in this photograph was created using AI.
