Brandon A. Dalmer

Lenna

Acrylic on Panel
36 x 24 inches
2024

The Lena (or Lenna) image is a widely used standard test image in the field of image processing. It originated from a 1972 issue of Playboy magazine, featuring a model named Lena Forsén. The image has been used for decades to test algorithms for image compression, filtering, and various other image processing techniques. The scan became one of the most used images in computer history.

While it has historical significance, its use has also sparked discussions about ethics and the portrayal of women in technology, leading to calls for replacing it with more appropriate images in academic and research contexts.

Lenna is so widely accepted in the image processing community that Forsén was a guest at the 50th annual Conference of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) in 1997.
