Ramiro Smith Estrada

FLESH

Oil on canvas
11 x 19.5 Inches, Framed
2026

The Calling the light series is an attempt to summon a glimmer of light through the fog of the daily news. These works are stills from movies that do not actually exist. To construct these scenes, Estrada references stills from apocalyptic science-fiction films, with dark, ominous skies hanging overhead. The "subtitles" are phrases Estrada underlined in whatever book he happens to be reading at the time.

In this series, the lines come from “The Border Trilogy” by Cormac McCarthy. These phrases, superimposed over modernized imagery, demonstrate the striking universality of the 1930s prose. Removing the context from both references, Ramiro pieces together new realms where he lets the hands do the talking.
