Andrew Wright

Disused Twinned 35mm Cameras

Silvered objects and custom plinth
60 x 13 x 13 in.
Edition of 1
2015

This mixed-media sculptural work focusses on the materiality of the camera itself. At first glance, this work seems to comment on the idea of the readymade by taking an obsolete and inexpensive piece of technology and turning it into a valuable commodity object. But taken further, we must also consider that in this silver casting, the camera and the lens are completely obstructed and shut off from the world, no longer an object to view from, becoming instead an object to be viewed (...) The cubic structure that houses the object is in fact a closed circuit of mirrors, reflecting inward and producing an infinite series of repetitions of the image of the silver camera. With the sculpture trapped within this impenetrable hall of mirrors, Wright stages a subtle role reversal of the camera, as it becomes a closed circuit of information – a sort of double negative of a visuality.

The sculpture consists of a wooden plinth containing LED strip lighting, a silver-braided electrical cord (currently wired for 110-120VAC and can be modified to suit), a 5-sided mirror box, and two 'silvered' objects.

The work requires no additional lighting and is best viewed in subdued lighting conditions. Should not be viewed in direct sunlight.
