In calculating air quality, scientists look at several pollutants, including PM2.5 particles which are a consequence of wildfires and fossil fuel burning. These particles are the smallest and one of the most dangerous pollutants in the air. The province of Ontario uses 11 colours to communicate the air quality health risk. The colours range from light blue (lowest risk) to dark maroon (very high risk) – a cataclysmic colourway.
