Bliss

Acrylique sur panneau | Acrylic on panel
40 x 48 po / in (102 x 122 cm)
2025

“Bliss,” the default wallpaper for Windows XP, is perhaps the most widely viewed photograph in history. Taken in 1996 by Charles O’Rear in the Carneros region of Sonoma County, California. Though often assumed to be digitally manipulated, the photograph was taken with Fujifilm Velvia, a film stock known for its rich color saturation, and remains unaltered. In its idyllic simplicity, “Bliss” evokes a pastoral calm that stands in quiet contrast to the digital age it came to represent. Commissioned by Microsoft, the image was transformed from a local landscape into a global visual icon, blending photography, marketing, and technological history into a single, enduring image.
