Rosalie Gamache is a Montreal based painter. Gamache graduated from Université Laval in 2018 with a BFA, which she completed with an exchange semester at the École des beaux-arts de Marseille in 2017. Before her university education, she developed unique expertise in historical materials and techniques of drawing and painting with a professional practice of portraiture and a year at the Florence Classical Art Academy

in Italy.

Gamache has presented several solo and group exhibitions in Canada and Europe, showcasing her work at venues such as the Frauenmuseum in Bonn, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Maison de la culture Mercier, the Centre d’exposition de Val-d’Or, and the Florence Biennale. She received grants from Première ovation (2015, 2019), the City of Quebec (2021), the Canada Council for the Arts (2021), and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (2023). With Duran Mashaal, she participated in the latest editions of the Papier/Plural and Art Toronto fairs, and presented her work in New York as part of the 2024 edition of Future Fair. Through oils, Rosalie Gamache’s paintings explore identity, embodied existence, and the lyrical potential of ambiguity. She is drawn to transitional states, fluid relationships, and forms that resist fixed definition. Using classical pictorial techniques, Gamache approaches instability as both a visual and conceptual space. Her technique reinterprets demi-pâte, a 19th-century French method known for its smooth, soft surface.

Her training in contemporary and fine arts informs a practice that combines technical precision with a critical engagement with the codes of classical painting. In Peintures blanches (2020–2022), she draws on the genre of still life to question the relationship between pictorial matter and its representation. Familiar objects dissolve beneath a thick layer of white material that evokes paint itself, playing on paint’s paradoxical ability to reveal and conceal.

Since 2021, Gamache has explored the historical genre of the nude as a space shaped by heteronormative power dynamics. Historically inaccessible to women, the nude becomes a site for new forms of visibility for queer and nonconforming bodies, developed in collaboration with models from her community. In Corps recouverts (2021–2024), bodies are veiled in fluid material that blurs sexual markers and evokes transitional identities. Transparaître presents translucent figures in moments of introspection or merging into one another within dreamlike landscapes. Rather than staging the body as a passive object, her work transforms the nude into a subject shaped by vulnerability, affect, and relationships.

Against a visual popular culture marked by immediacy and consumability, Gamache’s approach to painting embraces a delicate, precise slowness. Through layering, translucency, and tight framing, she creates tension between precise figuration and its dissolution. The sensuality and fluidity of paint serve a renewed representation of the body within a feminist approach attentive to the ties that connect us beyond the skin.
