Magida El-Kassis

The Dance

Inkjet Print
9 x 7 in. Framed
Edition of 5
2024

Looking closely at the evolution of the self, I find myself often grappling with the questions surrounding femininity, the elusive concept of beauty, and the existential questions of purpose and immortality. With this series I expand on the struggles of “womanhood”, and the intricacies and complications with my journey of trying to create life, reflecting on the loss and grief of multiple miscarriages. We are conditioned to believe at a very young age the sole purpose of the woman is procreation, and warned to be careful with how easy it is to create life - but for some - not so much. Inspired by Baroque still life paintings, I use symbolism to represent fertility, vitality, youth, and abundance - challenging the false reality that many of these hopeful paintings portrayed.
