海底撈月 // Ciao!

The Chinese phrase 海底撈月 (Stealing the Moon from under the Sea) refers to a winning hand in Mah Jongg. "Ciao" functions as a pun with the Mah Jongg pairing of consecutive tiles (吃) pronounced "Chow"

The characters inscribed on these tiles function as a phonetic loanword for "Fascist" in Cantonese. While the individual characters carry their own weight, their combination serves a purely mechanical, phonetic purpose:

法 (Faat): Meaning "Doctrine" or "The Way" (Dharma), used here for the "F" sound (as in Faat Gwok / France).
西 (Sai): Meaning "West," serving as a phonetic placeholder.
斯 (Si): Lacking independent semantic weight, used almost exclusively for phonetics.
